Instead of leaving a passive aggressive flag, I might leave a little white flag. A little funny (I give up, you frigging stole my flag!) and a little snarky, without being so overt about it. And people who don’t know what happened might just think it’s a decoration.
Let’s hope a little kid stole the flag without knowing better.
Jennah–I don’t think it’s passive aggressive, it’s as direct as I can be without knowing who stole it. And I guarantee you it wasn’t a little kid. The pot is quite tall, and I don’t live in an area where small children run around unattended.
Personally, I like the last one.
I like them all, but favor #2!
Thanks for not snatching the plants, but I need my flag back. You should set up an motion sensor auto sprinkler and soak that person. Matti
The last one! It makes me laugh and makes me righteous, the perfect combination!
Oh I vote on both ‘Not for Steal’ and ‘Telling your Mother’ ! So funny!
Oh I like Matti’s idea for the auto sprinkler – but instead make it a water-squirter!
My favorite is the last one!
Freedom isn’t free for sure.
Some lines from the Star Spangled Banner might be appropriate.
“O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?”
I like #2.
hahahaha. I like the last one…
or a play off the star spangled banner…
“the land of the free and the home of the brave” – brave people don’t steal flags.
Number 3!
I liked the quote in your comment>
I give up, you frigging stole my flag!
But the last one above is my fave of the choices.
it was me, I took it….and I learned it from watching you, okay! Just kidding, it wasn’t really me. Can I replace it with a Lakers flag? I’m sure that that would last about 20 seconds around here
I vote for number 2.
LOL. I vote for the last one.
“you must have needed the flag more than I…”
I think “not for steal” is the best one! But I don’t know I’d advise the note route – someone stole my bestest tomato plant (see link below) so I left a funny but snarky note and the next night they stole another plant AND the note!

sorry about the loss of your flag – may the theives receive karmic retribution, eg, a rocket red glare landing on their foot? BUT – what a great idea – I went out & got some small flags myself for the 4th of July celebration. A grand idea you have! I love this gardening site. Thanks for all your great work.
Why not buy a bag of cheap flags at the dollar store and replace them each time one is taken. Spread the patriotism.
I vote for #2.
Sorry about the flag, but I think the pot looks fab without it. Let those lovely plants shine!
I guess the best one is the last one ,freedom is not free and the flag neither.
I vote for the “Mother” one. It’s funny without being bitter — and, sadly, bitter would make the thief happy. But I agree with other people, the pot’s gorgous without the flag.
a squirrel, the wind, a bird, or a rat.
? You would probably be surprised what the local wildlife can do. I have birds that keep stealing the metal plant markers out of my flower beds. I know, cause I seen them! I had some wrens one year that made a nest with some dryer lint, (no idea how they actually got that?) a tag out of a shirt, a bubble gum wrapper and some twine. A total hodge podge of junk in there
Carmen–The wind *maybe* but it wasn’t in a place that any of the creatures you mentioned could have gotten at it. I’m sure it was a person.
I purposefully put out dryer lint and the shavings from my standard poodles for the birds. It makes good nesting material!
