I was on TV! Adriana Martinez of Anarchy in the Garden and I were on Good Morning Texas yesterday morning to discuss some of the cool new things we saw at the Garden Writers Symposium. I was super nervous before hand, but thanks to the great tips Adriana and I received from pros Shirley Bovshow and Joe Lamp’l, I think it went really well. See for yourself:
It actually turned out to be a lot of fun, and not scary at all. We had this plan to go to bed at 10pm the night before, but instead we stayed up all night working on our talking points and laughing hysterically at each other in between getting actual work done. But even though we only had a few hours of sleep, we dragged ourselves out of bed and managed to get 6 plants, 3 containers, 3 tools, books, seeds, and various other props down to the TV station by 8:15am.
The hosts of the show, Rob McCollum and Amy Vanderoef were really nice and friendly, as were all the show’s crew. I know this is a really a “duh” observation, but when you see camera people, production assistants, on air personalities, etc doing their thing, you are really impressed with how professional and good they are at their jobs. At least I was.
About an hour after we arrived, our segment was filmed live. It was the fastest couple of minutes of my life. I was sure that after we were done talking, they would be mad that we didn’t fill enough air time (it felt like we had talked for 3.6 seconds), but apparently we filled the right amount, because they zipped on to the rest of the show and that was that. We packed up our stuff and had a went to a hole in the wall cafe for breakfast.
Oh, and Katie Elzer-Peters was awesome enough to drive us to the studio, thank you so much, you rock!!!
Here are the products we talked about, in case you’re interested in checking them out further.
- ‘Katrina’ African Iris
- ‘Bountiful Blue’ Blueberry bushes
- ‘Black Velvet’ Petunias
- Two Lechuza self-watering containers: Balconera and Cubico
- Simple Garden (will be available in Crate and Barrel soon)
- P. Allen Smith’s Container Gardening Deck
- Corona Clippers “Dual Cut” bypass pruners (will be available in November)
- Botanical Interests iPhone app

SOOO cool! Congrats! Can’t wait until you have a regular TV show. We need more smart, cool, people out there talking about plants!
You tow are fantastic! Bet Texas TV was never so fun.
Awesome! wish I could have seen it!
Mary–Did you see the clip I included in this post?
Wow, amazing clip!
Awesome segment and you looked fantastic. I’m totally thinking of getting those pruners for DH for his birthday (in November). He’s in love with his Felco 9s–would he also have use for these or would it be redundant.
Joseph, Robin, Sasha — Thanks! It was so much fun! I’m addicted!
Jen–They are really nice pruners. There is actually a whole line of Corona dual cuts with the same high quality craftsmanship, and special notch in the blades for better/easier cuts. The hand held pruners would probably be a replacement for his Felcos, although I think there are a couple of good reasons why the dual cuts would be better than the Felcos (which are also excellent pruners, so I’m not a hater
). The main cool thing about the Corona dual cuts is that notch I talked about in the video, that makes cutting branches easier. Anyway, let me know if you need help picking one out.
How incredibly exciting! Congrats!
Thanks meems!
You guys did an amazing job. Cool, articulate and you didn’t look nervous at all. You are both naturals. Congrats!
Fern & Adriana…we loved the spot! I had no idea you were on the “jumbo tron” too. Very cool! One quick note…the Dual Cuts will be in our warehouse in November, available on our website, http://www.coronaclipper.com, in late Nov- beginning of Dec and in-stores the first part of 2011. And Fern, you also mentioned in the spot that the Dual Cuts provide 20% more cutting power however our research shows it more like 25% more cutting power over traditional pruners. So that notch gives you even more power than you thought
The folks here at Corona loved the spot and thought you both did a fantastic job. Fern, I think you should get a tat now and be known as the Tattooed Gardeners. Keep up the great work ladies!
Congratulations! It looks great!
Black petunias were one of my favorites to have back at my country.
You ladies scored a home run on this one! Way to go! You were poised, relaxed and you gave excellent take away points. Also, I really liked your energy. You kept “up” the entire segment and many people do not do that when they have so much to remember to say.
Ya did good!
I had so much time visiting with you at GWA. It was really fun to FINALLY meet you both in person.
Keep up the EXCELLENT work.
LOL I meant to say “I had so much FUN visiting with you at GWA”
I need more coffee!
LOVED seeing this segment and I would not have believed y’all had butterflies appearing on this show. I am really looking forward to checking out the “simple garden” pot at Crate and Barrel and I usually do not spend my money on trendy gardening products.
And, mentioning the apps for gardening was icing on the cake.
Thanks and I am totally copying the containers you posted on the site!
Congrats, Fern! I’m a little late to the party but wanted to say you did so well and looked great on camera! Way to go!
