Remember a couple of weeks ago when I wrote about protecting a balcony garden from the rain? I thought I would share some photos of the pots I couldn’t move or otherwise protect.
Before:
Note the pot in front and how nice the variegated aeonium looks.

Note the lush leaves in beautiful shades of chartreuse and plum.
After:
The aeonium rotted and the other succulents in this pot aren’t far behind.
Rain ripped all the leaves off my potato vine.
Yeah, it would be nice if my landlord installed some rain gutters.

Oh no! I over-watered my succulents and unfortunately they all died on me. I don’t understand why because the soil was bone dried and I just put water at the bottom to let it absorb.
Oh gosh, I am so sorry. Everything was looking so beautiful, too!
Louise — That doesn’t sound like your succulents died from over-watering. Maybe they died from lack of water, and when you watered them, it was already too late?
Gen — Thanks. I’ve cut everything back, hopefully they’ll recover.
I am wondering if I should show you what 18 inches of snow will do to all your lovely containers? That is those that survived the freezing -12 temps. Oh well, more room for new plants in the spring.
Your planters were so very lovely, I am hoping that they respond to some TLC and start to look better soon.

Jen — Heh. Touche.
Oh no!!!! I think we need to work out a rain trading system, we’ll take the excess because we don’t get much (or any) here in Southern Oz
In saying that it actually rained this morning, which is my water restriction watering day!!! Oh the irony.
Maybe they’ll recover? Maybe?? eternal optimism …
Transplant your surviving succulents to a new pot with dry soil mix and they will be fine. Sorry for your losses. It seems something always has to “happen”. All we can do is try our best. Nature will always win at times. Good luck!
Prue — We don’t get much rain here either. We just get our entire year’s worth of rain at once. :-/
Julie — That’s a good idea. I’ll do that later today.
