This past weekend I’ve been spending my time shooting and editing my first video blog post. I’m really excited about the potential to show different aspects of container gardening in a new way, but I am definitely not a natural in front of the video camera, so I hope you’ll bear with me as I experiment with the best way to shoot videos for Life on the Balcony. If I can finish the editing tonight, I’ll be posting a video Monday morning about a really neat tool aHa Modern Living sent me to review. It’s called the Soil Scoop and I think a lot of container gardeners will find that other than a pruner, the soil scoop will do everything they need as far as tools go.
Here is a little assassin bug that got the “thrill” of its life when I had to move it out of the way while making the video.

In addition to having to relocate bugs, I also had the pleasure of working around my neighbor’s noisy air conditioning unit, someone mowing their lawn, fighter jets flying over head and some jerk honking his horn and yelling for his girlfriend instead of acting like a gentleman and ringing her doorbell. I have a new respect for on-location reporters!

Fern, I can’t wait to see you on camera!! I love doing video posts, but people like to say they take less time, and that simply isn’t true.
Between all the shoots you need to do (hell-o, ring the danged doorbell, dude!) and the editing, it takes some effort!
Thanks Gen! It definitely doesn’t take less time. Unless you are just pointing your video at something that is already going on and posting it unedited on your blog, I agree, videos take waaaay more work!

I make my little videos with Windows Movie Maker. While I don’t do any on camera work, I’ve found that recording the video-then recording the audio with the built in microphone saves some time.
I am so glad you decided to shoot videos. I just got a Flip camera to do the same.
Speaking of soil scoop, I’ve been looking for one! I want one that looks like a cup though. Can’t wait to see you video!
