Using Ornaments in a Container Garden

In the largest of gardens, ornaments can sometimes be tacky, so using them in a small container garden is even more difficult to get just right. Here are some ideas I’ve seen around the internets.

I love the idea of using a few river rocks piled next to a pot. Not every ornament needs to be in a container.

Again, the ornament is outside of any of the containers. I love the idea of using a great, small piece of sculpture nestled between plants.

In this photo, the ornament is the pot. Hey, when you’re short on space, two-fers are a good idea!

Another smart idea for small-space gardens is to use the walls. Here, a rustic looking ladder and a few pots add nice texture to the wall in the background.

Functional items can also be ornamental, like the trellis in this photo.

Some other ideas:

  • Solar powered lights can also be both decorative and functional.
  • Tastefully selected wind chimes add visual and aural interest.
  • A birdbath nestled amongst pots would look nice and would provide a water source for beneficial birds and insects.
  • Marbles would make a great mulch and add a pop of color in an unexpected place.
