I saw this “herb keeper” and thought to myself…how is this any different than sticking the herbs in a cup of water and sticking the whole thing in the fridge? Is the green silicon ring really that fantastic?! Anyone care to enlighten me, or do you agree? Share your opinions in the comments.
“Keep fresh herbs or asparagus crisp and green longer than mere refrigeration by immersing the stems in water. Clear plastic keeper has a removable insert with water fill line and perforated cup for easy draining. Green silicone gasket provides resistance, allowing herbs to rest in a raised position for easy access. Large capacity keeper fits in most refrigerator doors.”

Looks like something I’d just have to find a place for in the cupboard.
Erin–Really? What about it appeals to you?
There are so many gadgets sold for single, specific uses… and most of them do things that could just as well be done by a more general item. Like in this case, a glass. It’s not only a waste of money; it’s a waste of space.
I’m cool with just pulling it out of the ground when I need ‘em. The soil seems to do the job.
The only benefit I see to this would be that it keeps excess oxygen away from the plants by sealing up the space air-tight. I guess, it also could prevent spills, easier than a small-bottomed glass. Personally, I wouldn’t buy it, but apparently some business person felt they could make a profit by manufacturing these things, so… more power to ‘em, I guess!
As a side note, my hubby is from France, and lots of people there swear by their special cheese containers. Supposedly these specially-designed cheese holders (which just look like normal plastic storage containers to me) make the cheese last longer. Must be one of those things. [shrug]
Cath — I’m with you. I have a very small kitchen, I don’t have room for such highly specialized gadgets.
Matt–That usually works for me too. Though sometimes I’ll pick herbs early if I’m afraid they’re going to bolt or I need to take them somewhere else (I cook at my parents’ house quite a bit).
Abigail–Now I’m curious about that mysterious cheese contraption. Hey, I’ve been meaning to email you for a while, I don’t think my comments are showing up on your blog?
Ha! I’d rather spend $20 on more garden seeds….oops, I did that already.
Good point Rowena!
