If your nasturtiums are anything like mine, they’re definitely in need of some sort of trellis, unless you want them to trail over the side of the pot you have they growing in. There are a number of attractive trellises that you can buy, and plenty of DIY options that I’ve been exploring lately. Now if my plants would just hurry up and flower already, I would really appreciate it!

Share your favorite trellis finds and ideas in the comments!

The trellis I am using in the above photo was purchased at Ikea a year or two ago. A quick search of their website indicates that they aren’t selling that trellis anymore, but they have an even cuter option. I think I am going to get these for my cucumber plants. At $2.99 how can you go wrong:

Amazon (of all places!) also has some cool trellis options. For example, I really like this 48-Inch Wave Pot Trellis and I bet this Decorative Bird Metal Fence Trellis would look great with nasturtiums growing through just one side, so that they don’t totally cover up the beautiful leaf design.

On the DIY front, I have been experimenting with a couple of different options. I have some nasturtiums growing on a simple tripod made with three bamboo rods tied together with some garden twine. It’s not the most beautiful trellis I’ve ever seen, but it has a nice rustic look, and soon it will be covered in nasturtiums anyway. Another thing I am experimenting with are repurposed decorative wire border edging (similar to this). I bought some super cheap at the discount store and (because it is so cheap) was able to use pliers to bend each piece into a triangular obelisk. For $4.99 I was able to make 6 obelisks. I’ll try and remember to post a photo of them on the Facebook page when I get home today.

I’ve been using coat hangers on my patio tomatoes! :)

I’m very fond of my two trellises for containers from H. Potter http://hpotter.com/index.php/trellises/set-of-2-trellises.html, one smaller 21″, one larger 28″. Traditional look and iron, so I know they’ll last practically forever.

My nasturtiums are under attack by cabbage worms. And here I was, so excited to see the hundreds of little white butterflies. Ha. I spend at least once a week sifting through them and squishing the little buggers. They are not easy to find.

Great ideas. This isn’t nearly as economical as the items you share, but this Crate and Barrel trellis has a lovely design:

Darn :( I would have picked up a trellis or two at Ikea, I wish that I’d read your post before I made the trip there today.

Thanks for sharing the tips and ideas. I use some easy to bend wire as trellis. So that I can make different shapes for different climbers.

@ Sasha: You are right. I’ve visited the link.

Great finds! And I can’t wait to see your homemade trellises! As affordable as the Ikea one is (thanks for sharing) I bet you could make one twice as tall for the same price on your own :)

last year I made some trellises out of bamboo stakes from HD. Not as pretty as the frames pictured but they worked pretty well. I have to find a new method this year ’cause one nephew likes to pull out the stakes in the garden and I can’t get him to stop.

MBT-you could alway re-purpose some barbed wire for those trellises >:) Or perhaps paint them pink and they won’t be so appealing….

I’m allowing mine to trail out and down a pot I have atop a pedestal. So far, I’m not very impressed with the growth habit of ‘Spitfire.’ Maybe that’s because I’m used to a viner with much more energy and agility. Will you have to keep tying your “nastie” as it grows up that trellis? I’m overworked already and don’t like to keep tying and tying, I get enough of that with my tomatoes. ‘Spitfire’ is purported to be a climber so if it don’t do that on its own, it ain’t my fault.

TC–Mine is already taller than the trellis. I don’t tie it or give it any special attention other than to occasionally weave the leaves around the trellis.
