My best advice is to enlist the aide of the grandkids! (Or borrow a neighbor child, perhaps) I just can’t get down and up alot anymore so I dig or hoe the holes for all the spring transplants and my 9 year old grand daughter puts all the transplants in and she is good! Breaking up the root bound, planting to the right depth and then pushing the soil down around it just right. Then she delights in the garden as things grow and produce.
Thanks for the great gardening tips for arthritis sufferers! Another tip is to use a standing table garden, like the one from MinifarmBox, which allows you to tend your garden in a standing position. They are great for kitchen herb gardens and deep enough to grow veggies! http://www.minifarmbox.com/products
You need to use the proper tools instead of just your hands all the time. And maybe consider square foot gardening also, so your garden is a little smaller, and more manageable.
Great article Fern for us arthritis sufferers! For Mother’s day my husband bought me a great gift. It’s called the Garden Rocker Comfort Seat. You can find them online here: http://www.buycheapr.com/us/result.jsp?ga=us6&q=garden+rocker+seat. But he found mine at CVS. I have a garden seat that rolls but only side to side. With this chair (that you can put to different heights) you can lean forward and side to side. You can pivot and turn around. It is great! It also has a padded seat add on with pockets that hang down the sides for tools and whatever. The padded seat makes it more comfortable because it is plastic. I have a bad back with arthritis and this really helps with gardening. It is very light and easier to carry than my rolling seats! You should check it out.
