Kimberly–I always sow those three directly in place. Carrots especially don’t transplant very well.

I’m growing most of my fall veggies for the first time. Can chard, scallions, and carrots be sown directly where they will grow, or do i need to do the usual plant the seeds in my tiny greenhouse and plant them out later?

Jacqueline–All of the plants listed above are either really fast growers (salad greens) or can tolerate some cold. Fall is over in November, which is three months away.

Hmm…don’t quite get it. If I plant these seeds now (the beginning of September), I can still harvest them in the Fall? How can the plants grow so quickly to be able to harvest in 1 – 2 months?

Kathy–There are some varieties of winter squash that are smaller and better suited to container gardening, but you’re right, most of them would be better suited to a community garden plot or back yard bed.

This year I’m planting the colorful mixes of Swiss chard, beets and carrots. They all look so good together on a plate. The snap peas climb up the frame to my leaf holding bin and the arugula & spinach will fill the space left by the tomatoes.

Just sorted my seed packs during lunch today – trying many things on your list plus winter squash – which may be a bit big for containers, but I have a raised bed I can clear out now for it.
