I have done bush type (Celebrity) tomatoes in a large plastic pot and they did well. I plant in a mix of marigolds to keep pests out, as I garden on a ground floor open patio. They should do well in a SmartPot also. But, I did vote for herbs, cause they are something you can dry and have during the winter as well as from fresh. Both tomatoes and herbs are great in containers. Oh...you may want to try some leaf lettuces and mesculn as well.

I have never heard of these pots before and am anxious to see how they compare and what their sustainability is. Thanks for your daily blog, I love reading it.

I love the idea of this mini-experiment. I think every garden is an experiment-in-progress, but doing it deliberately makes it easier to see what's working. This is the first year I'm winter-sowing outside. I'm planning to take some of my seeds and sow the same variety both indoors and outdoors, so I have a direct comparison of the two methods.

Ack - only one choice from the 2 groups - not fair. But I was still able to pick one in each category that's both edible and beautiful. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
