Post image for Smart Pot Comparison – Choosing the Plants

Yesterday I posted about my plans to compare a fabric pot called “Smart Pot” to a regular plastic pot. You can win a Smart Pot to help me with my test by leaving a comment on that post. But now I need your help deciding what to plant in my Smart Pots. Please vote in both of the polls below.

Wow, nice to see I chose the already popular options of peppers and lavender. I might be a little skeptical about their stability and would stray away from anything too top heavy from sunflowers. But then, that’s why you’re testing this out for us.

Kimberly–Not all sunflowers are tall! ;-) Though I’ve grown tall sunflowers in pots before without any problem.

Ack – only one choice from the 2 groups – not fair. But I was still able to pick one in each category that’s both edible and beautiful. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I love the idea of this mini-experiment. I think every garden is an experiment-in-progress, but doing it deliberately makes it easier to see what’s working. This is the first year I’m winter-sowing outside. I’m planning to take some of my seeds and sow the same variety both indoors and outdoors, so I have a direct comparison of the two methods.

I have never heard of these pots before and am anxious to see how they compare and what their sustainability is. Thanks for your daily blog, I love reading it.

What fun, I’m interested to see the results as well as how the pots perform.

I have done bush type (Celebrity) tomatoes in a large plastic pot and they did well. I plant in a mix of marigolds to keep pests out, as I garden on a ground floor open patio. They should do well in a SmartPot also. But, I did vote for herbs, cause they are something you can dry and have during the winter as well as from fresh. Both tomatoes and herbs are great in containers. Oh…you may want to try some leaf lettuces and mesculn as well.
