Adriana and I headed up to LA yesterday to hear author Novella Carpenter discuss her Oakland farm, which is the subject of her book Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. We met up with Milli and her friend Amy and had fun mingling with other LA gardeners and bloggers.
All-in-all I had a great time, but some of the photos of the animals Novella slaughtered were a bit difficult to stomach. She was talking one minute about how her pigs tails wagged when they ate something they liked and the next minute she was showing a photo of all of the bacon and pork chops she got from those same pigs.
Here’s the crowd before the event started. By the time things were underway, I’d estimate about a hundred people had shown up.
This is Novella showing a photo of her garden. She described as very un-Martha. Novella used mostly (all?) materials that she found to build her raised beds and the other structures in her farm.
Chef Evan Kleiman interviewed Novella. She was an excellent interviewer (she’s also the host of “Good Food” on KRCW, so it’s not surprising) and obviously very interested in urban farming.
And this is me, Adriana and Milli after the event.

Ugh, some of the pictures were hard to stomach. I’m not quite as refined as the rest of gardening world. I love how you can see Milli and I trying to rebel rouse.
