Patriotic “Guerrilla” Gardening

I snuck back to my old office last night to do a little Memorial Day guerrilla gardening next to their front door. I like starting the red, white, and blue pots around Memorial Day in the hopes that they’ll be in their full glory by Independence Day. I figure I hit two patriotic holidays with one container. Be careful with containers that are small enough to be easily stolen, or with patriotic decorations like flags. I had someone steal my flag out of last year’s red, white, and blue container. I am sure there is a special place in hell for people who do that.

Here are the flowers I used in this container…

Clockwise from the top left: shasta daisy, sweet potato vine, red celosia, lobelia.

I planted the shasta daisy in the center back, with four celosia evenly spaced in a line in front of the daisy. Directly in front of the daisy, I planted the lobelia so that it spills over the front of the pot. On either side of the lobelia are a sweet potato vine.

Who do you think will notice my little container first? It’s right next to the front door.

Your post caught my eye, Fern. Does this count as noticing it first???

Did you vote for yourself noticing first? :-D

I can’t wait to see the container you planted in person. I may have to stop by tomorrow, even thought it is my day off.

I guess it’s official. My mom was the first to notice. ;-)

What a great idea. Hoping I can get a few of my neighbors to do the same. It’s a simple thing to do and brings so much joy. Thanks

That’s what moms are for! I love the container and love that you snuck in to your office to plant such eye candy. Nice gift for your colleagues.

I love how subtle the red, white and blue are. I guess I’ve seen too many red & purple salvia combos and impatiens and begonia pots and I’ve become jaded about patriotic pots. But this I love.

Yet another instance of, “I should have listened to my gut.” My first instinct was to go with Mom. Even though you said that she was going to be off, I got the feeling she would come by just to see it if she reads your blog. Lesson that seems to never be fully learned… ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS. :)

Beautiful container! I’ve never thought of planting with a theme color like that:) I’ve secured planters before by putting a butterknife on top of the drainage hold and looping a chain through to attach to a fence, but I don’t supposed that would help with the flag. The pot is beautiful:)
