November Contest – There’s No Need to Dread Winter!

in Contests

I’m very excited about this month’s contest, and I hope you are too! One of the reasons I am super excited is that my favorite seed company is donating part of the prize. The picture below is a hint…

How to Participate

It’s super easy to participate in this contest. All you have to do is comment on a post. Any post. For the next two weeks (until November 17th at midnight Pacific time). To be eligible, the comment has to contribute to the conversation, it can’t just be “great post,” or something similar. Ask a question, share your experience or plans for the future, respond to another commenter…If you make your comment a complete sentence, you should be fine. ;-)

I didn’t want to limit this month’s contest to people who have blogs, because I felt bad excluding non-blogging gardeners from last month’s contest. So if those of you who do have blogs could help me get the word out, I’d really appreciate it!

The Prize

The winner will receive a copy of McGee & Stuckey’s excellent book, Bountiful Container. He or she will also receive all of the seeds needed (lavender, mint, pansy, and thyme) to complete a project from the book called “Lavender Lady,” AND a natural cotton tote featuring the lavender drawing shown on the seed packet above. The seeds and tote are courtesy of Botanical Interests seed company.

How a Winner Will be Chosen

The comments on my blog are assigned a number automatically by my blogging software. I will use a random number generator to pick a number. The comment with that number will be selected as the winner. The more you comment, the more opportunities you’ll have to win!

Who is Eligible to Participate

Sorry, but only people residing in the U.S. will be eligible to win a prize. Canada, for example, has some crazy contest rules (I would have to take out a bond for $3000 to open up the contest to Canadians!) and the customs charges and international shipping costs make it impossible for me to open up the contest to people outside of the U.S. I’m sorry, I really wish things were different.

Though I can’t enter the contest, I wish you well with it and hope it generates lots of thoughtful conversation. :)

Oh well, even if I can’t enter the contest, Canada is kind of ……!

Best of luck with it. Sounds like a great one.

Tina — Yep, that’s fine. I just didn’t want people to cheat. :-)

Nancy & Jen — I am really bummed about Canada, because some of my favorite gardening blogs are from you all up north. I am sure I wouldn’t get caught if I opened things up to Canada without paying the $3000, but breaking the law makes me really nervous. ;-)

Hi Fern ~ I’ll help spread the word on Walk Down The Garden Path! I’m impressed with the research you’ve done about running contests. I wouldn’t know where to start, although my guess is, like anything, you can find it on the internet :)

Cindy — Having a law degree helps. I have access to legal databases and books that lay people don’t. ;-)

Any help spreading the word about the contest is GREATLY appreciated! :-D

I love lavender. Fresh it has so much more flavor that the culinary lavender in the stores. I will post a little later about your contest, Fern… :) Unless I forget…ummm…maybe I need to take some gingko….

I love your contests, hopefully I have better luck this time! Anyway, I didn’t have luck with lavender this summer. I bought a small lavender plant and used it for container arrangements. I made a mistake of combining other plants that need water and I killed it! I love love love the scent of lavender. If i’m lucky to win this prize I definitely need some guidance!

Marye — LOL. You’ll love the Lavender Lady container if you like lavender. It features lavender (hence the name) and has pansies, thyme and mint tucked around the sides. I am sure that running your hand through that pot would release the most divine scents!

Louise — I think lavender is one of those weird plants that, when it is in its exact favorite conditions, needs little attention. But if it is not in its ideal situation, can be very persnickety. If you win, you’ll have the book to guide you. It is probably considered “the” authority when it comes to growing edible plants in containers, so you’ll be in great hands!

Laender is one of my favorites. Currently I have 2 plants out in the garden. I planted them this past spring and so far they are doing well. I’ll see how they do through the winter.

Yay, yay! This is a contest I’d love to win! I love herb gardening, and my partner’s been making some awesome herbal infused liquors. I’d love to make my own pretty herbal pot!

I haven’t done a good job taking care of my lavendar this year. It’s in a part of the property I just haven’t had time to attend to and it’s getting weedy. I’ve thought about moving it, or creating a new area closer to the house. They do all right where they are, but they aren’t very prolific. I need to look up the requirements to figure out a new place to put the plants. The old place is getting kind of shady too.

What a great contest! I love lavender…this past summer I planted some seeds in a container on my deck. They grew beautifully but not too tall. I am hoping that they come back year after year and fill the container . The smell was heavenly! I would love to win this contest!I will spread the word on my blog!

Even though we have 5 acres, I should be blessed with a lovely, large, bountiful garden. The stinker is that it is heavily wooded and there is very, little sun that hits the ground. So whatever gardening I do will have to be in pots I can move around. It’s sad, really. …. do I hear violins playing in the background?

SC — That sounds like a great idea!

Tammy — Good point, even people blessed with a lot of property may not be able to use it all to garden. Welcome! I hope you find some useful tips on my blog.

Susan — Most varieties of lavender form nicely shaped clumps that don’t continually get taller and taller. I’m glad you had such great success this year. I have my fingers crossed that your lavender will still be around in the spring.

DH — I’ve found that lavender likes quick draining soil, that gets completely dry in between waterings, and full sun.

Gen — Herbal infused liquors sound tasty! How do you use them?

Love the lovely lavender, we have a ton of it but I’m not very good with containers so a book and project directions might help me get better! :) Happy fall.

I’d love to enter! I’m finding this blog very useful as I plan my balcony garden for next year. This year was sort of a solo experiment.

What a fun contest. I found your site via Cindy at Walk Down the Garden Path. That looks like a pretty lavender on the seed packet.

Karen — Bountiful Container would be a great book to get you started. It’s very thorough without being overwhelming or boring.

Meghan — I’m glad my blog is useful to you Meghan, I look forward to seeing you around these parts in the future!

Racquel — Glad you found me and the contest!

I love lavender! I love it so much I bathe with lavender scented soap. This may not seem so out of the ordinary, unless you’re a male.

Reply

Fern November 9, 2008 at 9:36 pm

TC — LOL. I don’t think lavender is soo flowery as to be exclusively feminine. Just think, if you win, you could make your own lavender soap!

Well, I finally got time to “surf over” to Botanical Interests website, I really like their theme. As a past owner of a brick and mortar musical instrument store which was forced out of business by a “super store” selling junk I have a strong dislike dealing with big box stores. Botanical Interests will get my seed business from now on! Thanks, Miss Fern for turning me on to them! :)

Denny — I didn’t realize that you are a musician. My husband has been playing bass for forever and is learning to play guitar. He sells vintage electric guitars and basses on the side. Like you, he hates the “big” music stores. He is very loyal to an independent shop near our apartment.

Botanical Interests’ seed suck. I bought a packet of green shiso two years ago, and got zero germination. Bought a packet of red shiso earlier this year, and got zero germination.

Reply

Fern April 27, 2010 at 10:14 am

Robert–Have you considered the possibility that the lack of germination is a result of something you’re doing, or that you sowed seeds that were past their viability date? I’ve had the complete opposite experience with Botanical Interests seeds that you’ve had. I get near 100% germination with their seeds. Moreover, seed companies have to submit samples of their seed to test labs and meet certain germination standards, among other things. So it seems rather odd that you haven’t had a single seed germinate after trying two different seed packets.

Sure sounds like you’re sold on their products, Fern. That’s great! It’s good to know there are still small businesses that stand behind their products, and people who believe in them. I’m seeded out for this year, but will definitely check Botanical Interests out when the Fall buying season comes along. Thanks for the heads-up.

My pleasure Tom. I totally feel ya on being “all seeded out.” The catalog extravaganza can be exhausting.
