People often ask, “Can you really cram succulents in there like that? Won’t they quickly out grow the arrangement?” Well…
The image above is two shots of the exact same container. The photo on the left was taken in July of 2008 and the photo on the right is from just a week or two ago. I think after 3 1/2 years, it is finally time to replant the pot and divide up that Paddle Plant (Kalanchoe luciae ‘Flapjacks’)!
So, I guess my answer to the original question is, yes, the succulents will eventually outgrow the arrangement, but it won’t be for quite some time, even years.

I love the before and after shot. Do they repot easily?
I guess I’ll find out this weekend!
The Donkey Tail tends to drop a lot of it’s ‘leaves’ when you touch it. That said, the grow roots real fast and you only need to drop them onto a small pot with soil. With direct sun, they take off.
Yep! That’s how I have so many on my own balcony!
Hi there, new follower.
That’s great info. We are planning to have a pot of succulents – and now know I can go ahead and let loose!

Hey Fern,
see you at the class on Saturday.
I love these two pictures. I think the larger version is beautiful! I would leave it as is for a few months, or give it to me

I love my Hens and Chicks but I wasn’t successful with the Paddle Plant. I’m not sure what happened because all my other succulents had snow on them this time last year and still survived. I may try them again. I love their shape.
What a great before-and-after photo! Those two succulents age gracefully compared to echeverias, aeoniums and graptopetalums, which get leggy and need to be cut back and replanted. Btw, you have what looks like Sedum burrito, which doesn’t lose its leaves quite as effortlessly as Sedum morganianum. The former is sold at nurseries for that reason, but the latter is more common because it has been around longer and is a popular pass-along plant.
And I always love how they look when they reach the crowded point- and they seem to be able to stay at that point for at least a year before they suffer from the crowding. Your pot looks great!
Absolutely beautiful Fern! Just a slightly larger pot should do it. Wonderful arrangement. You’ve got the thriller, spiller’s and filler’s!
We call it succulent container fluffing. Just received your book today
Thanks so much, looks fabulous!
I hope you enjoy it!
it looks so happy! how lovely… you can even take cuttings off of it by now…
