So…Balcony Gardener posted her list of the 7 best performers on her balcony. Here are mine, but there’s a catch. I don’t really have 7 picks. I need your help. If you add your best performers to mine, I’m sure we can get at least 7 recommendations for other balcony gardeners. Be sure to give some info about your balcony (your region, amount of sun, etc).
Succulents: I had a lot of success with Aeoniums (not so much with Echeverias!)

Edibles: Ruby Chard was super easy, beautiful and tasty.

Flowers: Happy Single Dahlia and ‘Terracotta’ Million Bells Calibrocha. The Dahlia was so easy to grow and the contrast between the eggplant colored leaves and the yellow flowers was beautiful. The Million Bells was also easy to grow, had no problems, and was constantly covered in happy little flowers.

Foliage: Japanese Sedge could also be listed under grasses, I guess. It has nice variegated foliage that hangs beautifully over the edge of my containers.

So what are your picks?!

My absolute favs, Japanese Annemones, any of the Miscanthus grasses, and a Ginko Biloba, tree. I have been growing those plants in containers for years, and they are performers. I did have to take the tree out and trim it a little. But you could just keep repotting it in a slightly larger pot every year. Ooops I hope that you wanted perennials, and trees in your list.

Mine would be all succulents and Fittonias! I love Fittonias…they have to have some shade. I have terrible luck with aeoniums and echeverias!! I live in zone 10.
My 7 this year are:
Nasturtium
Lavender
Coleus
Sugar Snap Peas
Cowhorn pepper
Flat Leaf Parsely
Scarlet Runner Bean
These were all grown in containers on my deck in zone 6!
Jen — I love Ginko trees. Either the male or the female tree smells bad though, right?
Julie — Are Fittonias good indoor plants? I am going to redecorate soon and I want to add some indoor plants.
Jen — I see a lot of my favorites on your list. Especially Nasturtiums and Coleus. What is Cowhorn Pepper like? I’ve never seen one of those.
