In case you haven’t visited the Life on the Balcony Flickr group, you might want to mosey on over. There are lots of great photos added to the pool, like some of these…

How neat is this canoe, repurposed as a vegetable planter?! I love how artfully the canoe has been planted, with neat rows of lettuce, chard and herbs along the edges and beans being trellised in the middle.

This is another great example of using an non-traditional object as a pot. You can probably find canoes, watering cans and other “potential pots” at yard sales or even at the curb on trash day.

I have been watching starjewel’s container garden take shape since she first posted photos in the Flickr group. I love how she clearly had a plan for her garden, as all her pots are a deep, spicy, red and the plants compliment the pots in shades of yellow, orange, and red. Her garden is also a great example of how to combine ornamental and edible plants. That guy in front in a cucumber.

Finally, you all know how much I love black plants, so you guys know I couldn’t resist sharing this great container planted by Jayme (check out this post with an interview with Jayme, who owns a great modern gardening accessories website).

I really encourage all you balcony gardeners who also enjoy photography to share your photos in the Flickr group. Taking photos of your garden on a regular basis is a great way to track its progress, and sharing them in the group is a fun way to connect with other gardeners.

Thanks for sharing this! I wasn’t aware of this Flickr group so I’ll head on over to check it out. While most of my gardening is on a plot of dirt, I do have a few containers here and there out on the terrace. It never occurred to me to use containers other than the standard garden pot, so I’ll keep an eye open for unusal finds at the flea market.
