I did something similar when I lived in an apartment - I used a green garland to make a tree shape on the wall! It was goofy, but fun. I hung mini ornaments on it, and strung lights around the ceiling molding. I'm a happy atheist, but I love Christmas! I think of it as a time to celebrate family, show love and generosity by making and giving gifts, and just generally take a step back from the pressures of real life and be silly and relax with the people I love.
