Happy Autumnal Equinox!

This post is scheduled to be published at 2:18pm PDT, the exact moment of the autumnal equinox. As far as I can tell, this means that the sun is exactly halfway through the sky on the day when daytime and nighttime are each exactly 12 hours long, after which nighttime will be longer until the vernal equinox in Spring.

I admit that the scientific definition makes my head hurt a little bit. But the long and the short of it is that today is the first day of Fall! Here in Southern California, it doesn’t feel much like fall. We’re sweating it out in the 90s and even the 100s in some places. But later this week I am super excited to visit my youngest brother at his university in Vermont. Of course, I am excited to see him, but I’m also looking forward to seeing what fall is like in areas with “real” seasons.

Are you doing anything special to enjoy this season?

Have fun in Vermont, Sept is the best month to visit the New England states. Nighttime temperature in NY has been hovering around high 50s, so definitely bring a light sweater with you!

Some of our trees are already turning here in Boston, so I am sure you will be treated to a wonderful display up in VT. It’s a beautiful state and this is the perfect time of year to visit. Oh, and Louise is right, a light sweater and some denims will serve you well on your trip.

Oh, will this REALLY be your first trip to the Northeast?

I suggest you bring more than a light sweater, though. You’ll want a fleece jacket and maybe a vest if you’re used to SoCal temperatures. (And bring one pair of warm socks!!!)

I’m envious of your Autumn trek to VT! Indulge in all the cider you can drink! Can’t wait to see your pix, Fern!

Louise–I can’t wait!

Bob–I will definitely be packing a jacket and other warmer clothes.

inviisiblebees–No, I was in Philadelphia two Februarys ago. I’ll be bringing layers, I’m a total So Cal wimp when it comes to cold weather. :-)

Happy Autumn! This is such a wonderful season, even in southern California! You asked the question, “Are you doing anything special to enjoy the season?” and I would have to say YES!
One thing that my family does every year (for as long as I can remember!) is to go visit Oak Glen. This little town is near Banning/Hemet and is only about 1 hour drive from Long Beach. In Oak Glen, the leaves change color, you can pick apples, taste an assortment of apples, apple cider, apple butter, fresh made doughnuts and enjoy the crisp air of the season!
I would recommend going in October, when it tends to be cooler and the leaves have had a chance to change. Weekends are the best since they have heaps of fun vendors and crafts folks in the town!
Who says California can’t celebrate autumn?!? :)
