Don’t forget about the container gardening tip contest, the deadline is this Thursday! Your tip gets you a chance to win 6 Botanical Interests seed packets of your choice. Considering that we’re all looking for ways to save money…free is good! Check out this calculator to figure out how much money you could save if you used your six seed packets to grow edibles.
Here are some of the great tips I’ve received so far:
- RainGardener suggested using recycled objects (like an unused BBQ) instead of a traditional pot.
- Otto uses a coffee filter to cover the drainage holes in pots before adding the potting mix. As he puts it, “Water drains out. Soil stays in.”
- Ann suggested using upended pots under other pots to raise them up to a more visually pleasing level.
Keep ‘em coming guys! To submit your tip, leave it in the comments section of this post, the original contest post, or send it to me in an email (fern at lifeonthebalcony.com).

My fav trick is planting in a pot with a drain hole and then sitting it inside of another decorative pot without a hole…when you water…nothing drains out the bottom!
I don’t have any “tricks” persay, but I’ve found that keeping it simple produces the best results. Play with texture, but keep the colors in the same family, don’t let pots overshadow the plants, and plant things with nice foliage so even when they’re out of bloom, things look pleasant.
