I was searching for some good suppliers of ‘Best Bet’ after a couple of people asked where to find the Iris that made me so happy. I bought the bulbs at a local nursery, but I found a website called Great Lakes Nursery Co located in Michigan that is selling ‘Best Bet’ bulbs for only $3.89 and even cheaper if you buy several at once. What a deal!
‘Best Bet’ is a large bearded Iris. The flowers are easily 6 inches across. It will bloom several times during the summer if you treat it nicely. This means watering it regularly and giving it a dose of fertilizer after each blooming period is over. I wrote a post last year about how easy Iris are to grow in containers if you’re interested. Their spikey green foliage gives nice height to a mixed container when the plants aren’t blooming.

The wonderful thing about irises is that they aren’t too fussy. They provide beautiful foliage when not in bloom and enjoy drying out between waterings. If you want to create a container that can take summer sun without the need to be watered daily, they are fabulous. There are some varieties with variegated leaves as well.
If you are looking to create a quick collection, ebay is a great place to buy a variety pack for about $1 – $4 a plant. Be sure to read feedback about the seller before purchasing.
