Mary--What about cheap copper coil from the hardware store? If you're interested in other possibilities, the University of California has a pretty useful article on all sorts of kinds of snail control methods.

@Mary C: I've used recycled copper wire around pots and it works just fine, as long as you have a wide enough band of it around your pot. You need enough in order to keep the snails and slugs away, not just shock them. That's why the copper tape is thin and wide. If you don't have a wide enough band of copper the snails and slugs just glide right over it. Experiment and see what works best in your garden. I ultimately gave up on the wire because it was so much work (I had really thin wire to work with) and had a lot of trouble to get it to adhere correctly to the pots while still maintaining the chemical reaction necessary to keep snails and slugs at bay. The copper has to be untreated for it to work correctly. Good luck!

Oooo...looking up red clover...

Did they mention anything about preventing leafminers? I found some yesterday >:(

And I've know about copper tape for awhile, but it's just so darn expensive. It's made me wonder...would copper wire from worn out extension cords wrapped around my pots work just as well...?

Good advice. Crop rotation and a crop row cover is the best way I know to deter pests in the vegetable garden.
