If your balcony is looking a little ragged around the edges, join the club. I’ve started pulling out plants that don’t look so good and cutting back others that could use a haircut. If you need a little inspiration to spruce up your balcony this fall, check out these combos:

Combo_mum blackie artemesia

1) Orange Mums, Sweet Potato Vine ‘Blackie,’ and Artimesia ‘Oriental Limelight’ - Orange, plum and lime look really great together and will spice up your balcony or patio with a little bit of the unexpected.

Combo_anenome fern lamium

2) Japanese Anemone, Maidenhair Fern, and Lamium – If you have a shady balcony, try using this combo with it’s bright white accents to lighten things up.

Combo_goldenrod aster statice

3) Goldenrod, Aster, Statice – This is a great combo if you’re looking to add some height. Look for a variety of goldenrod called ‘Golden Baby,’ it stays more compact and only gets to be about 24 inches tall.

Goldenrod and asters, two of my favorite plants, period. I do look forward to their appearance all summer long!

I love the Japanese anemone, too. I really like the idea of pairing it with the maidenhair fern. Such beautiful, delicate textures! Though, the ferns might get a bit crispy on my patio.
