Fleur Chat: Succulents in Bloom with Debra Lee Baldwin

by Fern on September 7, 2011

in Flower Chat

I’m sorry for getting this up a little bit late, but here is the transcript of our Fleur Chat held on September 1, 2011. The chat was moderated by yours truly (@lifeontheblcny). Our guest was Debra Lee Baldwin (@DebraLBaldwin), the author of two excellent succulent gardening books: Succulent Container Gardens and Designing with Succulents. We discussed succulents and cacti in bloom.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the discussion!

  • Q1 Succulents are usually grown for their fleshy foliage, but what is your favorite succulent when it’s in bloom?
  • Q2 Which succulents bloom and then die? Is there a way to prevent them from flowering?
  • Q3 I was surprised that many cacti actually have pretty flowers. Which varieties have the best flowers?
  • Q4 My burro tail sedum has never bloomed, am I doing something wrong?
  • Q5 Are there succulents/cacti that will attract wildlife like hummingbirds and bees?

@FleurChat: Ready to chat about succulent flowers with @DebraLBaldwin? She’s authored two books about succulents http://ow.ly/6imTC#fleurchat

@TyHall55: RT @LifeOnTheBlcny: Not sure how to participate in #fleurchat? Here’s more info: http://ow.ly/6in8s

@jchapstk: #fleurchat Hello, everyone.

@Suburban_Farmer: @4bratz2luv Don’t know about #fleurchat — #hobbyfarm is now 😀

@deltagardener: Hi made it tonightn #Fleurchat

@deltagardener: Love succulents #Fleurchat

@FleurChat: RT @DebraLBaldwin: Here’s Agave vilmoriniana in bloom … Bizarre, aren’t they? #fleurchat http://t.co/EIB7zKO

@deltagardener: Wishing I could grow agave here #Fleurchat

@jchapstk: Nice. RT @FleurChat: RT @DebraLBaldwin: Here’s Agave vilmoriniana in bloom … Bizarre, aren’t they? #fleurchathttp://t.co/6ztw3f5

@ecokatLA: Hey hey #fleurchat!

@AbanaJacobs: Thanks to >#fleurchat & @GGWTV I am a brand shiny new member! I have a sense of humor luv flowers & gardening!

@jmarkowski0: #Fleurchat and then Jersey Shore, the perfect evening

@DebraLBaldwin: @deltagardener you can grow agaves anywhere, in containers! Just overwinter them indoors, they’re asleep anyway. #fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat I love succulents, but don’t think of them as flowering plants. much.

@deltagardener: @DebraLBaldwin my Echeverias are quite leggy this year. Wondering how to remedy #Fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: The big thing now is small…small agaves and aloes suitable for pots. Hybridizers are coming up with some cool ones.n #fleurchat

@deltagardener: @DebraLBaldwin @deltagardener All my tender succulents spend 4 months inside uprising winter #Fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: Echeverias and all succulents need light or they’ll etiolate (get leggy). #fleurchat

@FleurChat: Q1 Succulents are usually grown for their fleshy foliage, but what is your favorite succulent when it’s in bloom? #fleurchat

@FleurChat: @deltagardener @jchapstk @jmarkowski0 @ecokatla @abanajacobs Glad to see you here in #fleurchat! :-)

@DebraLBaldwin: Aloes. There’s nothing like their torchlike flowers. Larger ones get several feet long! #fleurchat

@deltagardener: @DebraLBaldwin So perhaps BC doesnt have enough sun. It was a cool spring #Fleurchat

@jchapstk: Hello to all. RT @FleurChat: @deltagardener @jchapstk @jmarkowski0 @ecokatla @abanajacobs Glad to see you here in #fleurchat! :-)

@jchapstk: #fleurchat A1 sedum

@GreenSoil: Hello WAVING to all #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: Kristin, that’s what I’m thinking. Sun really makes a difference. At least 6 hrs a day during the growing season. #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @DebraLBaldwin The aloes at @TheHuntington are my fav. I can never capture good pics of them though. #fleurchat

@deltagardener: @DebraLBaldwin I will move them to new location next yr #Fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat A1 On second thought euphoria Crown of Thorns. I at least 7 different varieties in my window at work.

@GreenSoil: Thank you late but happy to be here #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: Aloes are hard to shoot in bloom because the flower spikes are vertical. And do close-ups. Geometry of bud arrangement is lovely. #fleurchat

@GreenSoil: RT @LifeOnTheBlcny: @DebraLBaldwin The aloes at @TheHuntington are my fav. I can never capture good pics of them though. #fleurchat

@deltagardener: I can’t get enough succulents. It’s going to be a cramped office this winter. #Fleurchat

@deltagardener: Q1 Echeverias #Fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: @deltagardener Ha! Sounds like you need a greenhouse. #fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat When I lived in so. cal everything bloomed. Here in MD not so much.

@LifeOnTheBlcny: RT @FleurChat Q1 Succulents are usually grown for their fleshy foliage, but what is your favorite succulent when it’s in bloom? #fleurchat

@deltagardener: @DebraLBaldwin @deltagardener I have a large greenhouse but unheated. Just heat mats for seedlings. #Fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: @jchapstk Must have been hard to leave the land where everything grows. (Sometimes too well.) #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @deltagardener Do you say “etch ay veria” or “eck eh veria?” 😉 #fleurchat

@GreenSoil: @FleurChat wonderful group #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: @jchapstk Why crown of thorns? #fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat Not really. I actually missed the seasons and the flowers that need them (tulips, certain trees, etc.)

@DebraLBaldwin: Pronunciation of echeveria is quite controversial. I could bore you with the arguments! #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @jchapstk PEONIES! That’s the only plant I am bummed about missing out on in So Cal. #fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat There was a huge crown of thorns growing in the greenhouse at my high school when I first joined the botany club. First love.

@deltagardener: @LifeOnTheBlcny @deltagardener I am one of the eck a veria people #Fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat I didn’t get into peonies until I came back.

@GreenSoil: have you ever gone to Julian to there Peonie Fest @LifeOnTheBlcny @jchapstk #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: @jchapstk It’s sort of a guy plant, too, with the thorns. Men love cacti, too. #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @deltagardener @DebraLBaldwin It’s funny how people are so passionate about that one. “Clematis” does the same thing to people. #fleurchat

@deltagardener: Succulents make you want to touch them #Fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @DebraLBaldwin @jchapstk Coworker told me he gave his wife a cactus as an anniversary present. Seemed like a risky gift. #fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat Crown of thorns looks like a cactus, but technically its a succulent. I grow cacti and succulents at work.

@DebraLBaldwin: @deltagardener Well, not all succulents are touchable! I know what you mean, though. #fleurchat

@jchapstk: I was thinking that too. RT @DebraLBaldwin: @deltagardener Well, not all succulents are touchable! I know what you mean, though. #fleurchat

@gardenfaerie: @deltagardener I feel the same about cactus. Seriously. #Fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: @sfgardengirl Isn’t that amazing? Can’t believe it’s RED. http://t.co/1Jairu6 #fleurchat

@UniquebyDesign_: @GreenSoil Cactus Annie…. that’ #fleurchat

@jchapstk: @LifeOnTheBlcny I have to treat my burros tail better. Those flowers are cute. #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: Q5:Those w tubular or lantern-like flowers, like kalanchoes and echeverias, attract birds. Iceplants in bloom hum w bees. #fleurchat

@nativegardener: @DebraLBaldwin Is this much the same as “cactus growing soil” sold in nurseries? #fleurchat

@nativegardener: RT @FleurChat: Q5 Are there succulents/cacti that will attract wildlife like hummingbirds and bees? #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: @LifeOnTheBlcny True, these are prominent, but in low light they’re smaller and sparser. #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: Soil mix: Yes, same as “cactus growing soil” at nurseries. #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: RT @DebraLBaldwin: Those w tubular or lantern-like flowers, like kalanchoes and echeverias, attract birds. Iceplants hum w bees. #fleurchat

@jchapstk: #fleurchat I’ve have seen bees and hummingbirds come to silk plants. If your plants are flowering and they are nearby, they will stop by.

@DebraLBaldwin: Aloe flowers…http://t.co/5WQd210 #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @DebraLBaldwin Is it possible to have succulents in bloom year round, or do they mostly bloom at one time of year? #fleurchat

@DebraLBaldwin: Ice plant, but no bees.http://t.co/La6p0Km #fleurchat

@jchapstk: @DebraLBaldwin That is what I miss about So. Cal. The lights not strong enough long enough here for that kind of bloon. #fleurchat

@UniquebyDesign_: @GreenSoil Annie, I have to get one of those babies so I can have some Annie here with me :-) #fleurchat

@LifeOnTheBlcny: @DebraLBaldwin My parents have a neighbor who replaced their front lawn with ice plants like that. #fleurchat
