Nice post. I feel the same way as you about slow release vs liquid fertiliser, but here anyway the liquid stuff is hideously expensive if you need to use it on a large scale.
As well as coffee grounds, another freeby which I use for my houseplants is the soak water from lentils.

a few tips about coffee.
*It is not as acidic as you would think. The process of brewing removes most of the acidity from the grounds. Therefore, it will not significantly change the pH of your soil.
*Also, make sure you dry the grounds -I leave mine on the filter out in the sun for the day, then sprinkle it around the garden in the afternoon and toss the filter in the compost-bin. If you don't dry the grounds they will mold.
*If you don't drink coffee, or would like to amend a large amount of soil, ask your local coffee shop if they would share their grounds with your garden. Most local coffee houses are thrilled that their grounds are put to good use.
