Hi Angie! Colanders are great for some plants (like succulents), but I’ve found they dry out too quickly for lettuces. Good luck with your first veggie garden!

Hi Fern,

I just came upon this post while researching for my own, very first vegetable garden and I saw a “hanging salad bowl” where the person used a enamel collander inside a plant stand. The holes of the collander are small enough for drainage but not too big that the soil falls out. Just google “collander salad bowl”.

I was wondering if you had a picture you could post of the salad basket? I am researching cool activities to present to young girls about nutritious food and increasing access to it. In a city I think this would be a cool idea. Thanks
