Hi Fern - my friends were discussing this the other day! They all voted they would move to my apartmenr, at which point I told them I'd selfishly barricade the doors, it's every balcony gardener for themselves (Except my friend M because he would bring loads of red wine to help with those long post-apocalyptic hours.)

We'd be stuffed if the mains water was affected - no rain = no plants = life in Australia. Although we have heavy water restrictions careful water saving techniques can work. But without this my balcony garden would cease to exist as we know it.

I'd invest in building a greenhouse. Since I live in Zone 5, my outdoor gardening span is from May to October. With a greenhouse, I'd be able to expand that to March through November. If I have to survive on my backyard/front yard, I'd convert my floral landscaping planting areas to garden, also.

Canning would become part of my fall spare time. Right now, I freeze tomatoes, spinach, and beans. I don't like to mess with canning, but I would start messing if there was a food scarcity. Another thing, freezing depends on electricity, but once you can, the food sits on a shelf.
