I found this informative and funny tutorial on growing carrots in containers and thought I would pass it along. I am growing these adorable little ball-shapped carrots. This is actually my first time growing carrots. Has anyone out there have tips for growing carrots? I think they’re supposed to be pretty easy…?

I had no idea you could do that in containers! (I guess that’s what this blog is about!)

I may have to resort to growing carrots in containers on the deck. And stop trying to grow them in the little garden plot beside the condo. The soil needs nitrogen, and more sand, and after all my hard work, they were riddled with tiny worms. So were the beets, it was a shame.

I’ve never had much success growing carrots in the ground, so I’ll have to try them in containers. Thanks for passing along this tutorial, and thanks for introducing me to Tonda di Parigi. I’d never heard of that variety, so I might have to give it a try.

Gen — This is my first go at carrots in containers, but I think so long as the pot is deep enough for the variety you are growing, it’s all good.

Jen & Tim — I think problems with growing carrots in the ground is what motivated the person who wrote the article I linked to to try containers. It seems to me that container gardening is a good option when there are problems with the ground soil (be it lack of nutrients, rampant pests, pollution, etc).

I’ve not grown them in containers. I do know they like rich soil and plenty of fertilizer. He mentioned adding peat, that’s something I’d think twice about using. Canada’s having a peat shortage, so use an alternative like mushroom compost or other organic additive.

TC — In the author of the tutorial’s defence, I think he lives in Australia, I don’t know if they are having a peat shortage or not. A Canadian friend of mine suggested using coconut coir as an environmentally friendly alternative to peat. Is that something you have any experience with?

I did grow a few carrots in a container once. I don’t know if it’s worth it here, when carrots are so cheap. I might grow a few but I think the herbs and lettuce are better investments.

Sarada — When you try growing carrots in Spring, I’d love to hear about your huge crop of carrots!

Mother in Israel — That’s a good point. We can get carrots here pretty cheap too, but if you want something unusual, or organic, it is probably cheaper and easier to grow it yourself.

I want to grow carrots because I find store bought carrots, even organic ones, to lack the tastiness & sweetness I remember as a child. My hope is that by growing my own, they will be better just as it is with growing your own tomatoes, etc. Is there a variety that will grow well in containers that have a great flavor? I am planning to companion plant them with lettuces and possibly sage and or chives depending on container size.

I haven’t been able to grow carrots or beets since I moved to Indiana. I could make pottery out of our ‘soil’ it’s so clayey. I might try growing them in containers because the varieties I want are NOT cheap (even when available) in the store.
