Post image for Patriotic “Guerrilla” Gardening

I snuck back to my old office last night to do a little Memorial Day guerrilla gardening next to their front door. I like starting the red, white, and blue pots around Memorial Day in the hopes that they’ll be in their full glory by Independence Day. I figure I hit two patriotic holidays with one container. Be careful with containers that are small enough to be easily stolen, or with patriotic decorations like flags. I had someone steal my flag out of last year’s red, white, and blue container. I am sure there is a special place in hell for people who do that.

Here are the flowers I used in this container…

Closeup of the Succulent Pot

There were a couple of questions about this particular container that can be seen in my balcony photos from the last post. This pot is in the book, in the section showing how to properly plant a pot. The container itself is from H. Potter, it’s their red aluminum planter. The spikey plant in back […]

Simple, Edible Fall & Winter Container Idea

Lacinato Kale is sometimes called “Dinosaur Kale,” and for good reason. The beautiful, blue-green, crinkled leaves can reach 2-3 feet tall. Plop one of these edible kales into the center of your pot and surround it with red (and/or white) cyclamen and you’ll have a eye-catching container to set near your garage or front door. […]

Orange, Blue, and White. Again.

Thumbnail image for Orange, Blue, and White. Again.

Maybe it’s because I went to a high school whose colors are orange, blue, and white. Or maybe I was dropped on my head too many times when I was a baby (I actually took a flying leap off a balcony when I was two…). But whatever the reason, I love orange and blue. I […]

Orange And Blue Window Box Plans

Thumbnail image for Orange And Blue Window Box Plans

Window boxes can be used in more places than just under windows. For example, I like lining the edge of my balcony with them and planting the boxes overflowing with plants. What’s nice is that my garage is right under my balcony, and I get to see all those plants spilling out of their window […]

How to Turn a Dingy Old BBQ into an Herb Container Garden

August 13, 2010
Thumbnail image for How to Turn a Dingy Old BBQ into an Herb Container Garden

Awhile back I heard about repurposing a mini-BBQ into an herb planter. I loved it, knew I wanted to try it myself, and immediately set about trying to track down a small grill on Craigslist. Buying anything on Craigslist is always an interesting experience, you get exposed to such a bizarre element of society. But […]

Show Your American Pride. Or British Pride. Or French. Australian…

Red, white, and blue are pretty popular colors! Those four above aren’t even all of the countries with flags that are those three colors. All this talk of flags is appropriate, because today is Flag Day in the United States. Did you know that? It’s easy for me to remember because it’s also my grandpa’s […]
