Orange And Blue Window Box Plans

by Fern on August 23, 2010

Post image for Orange And Blue Window Box Plans

Window boxes can be used in more places than just under windows. For example, I like lining the edge of my balcony with them and planting the boxes overflowing with plants. What’s nice is that my garage is right under my balcony, and I get to see all those plants spilling out of their window boxes every time I come and go. I just planted these two window boxes, remind me to post more photos when these window boxes grows in.

Post image for How to Turn a Dingy Old BBQ into an Herb Container Garden

Awhile back I heard about repurposing a mini-BBQ into an herb planter. I loved it, knew I wanted to try it myself, and immediately set about trying to track down a small grill on Craigslist. Buying anything on Craigslist is always an interesting experience, you get exposed to such a bizarre element of society. But that will have to be a post for another day…

Show Your American Pride. Or British Pride. Or French. Australian…

Red, white, and blue are pretty popular colors! Those four above aren’t even all of the countries with flags that are those three colors. All this talk of flags is appropriate, because today is Flag Day in the United States. Did you know that? It’s easy for me to remember because it’s also my grandpa’s [...]

A Simple, Yet High-Impact Container Idea

May 4, 2010
Thumbnail image for A Simple, Yet High-Impact Container Idea

I really shouldn’t post this today, I should wait until all the flowers are blooming to photograph and share it. But I couldn’t resist, I am so excited by this combo. Since I grew so many ‘Spitfire’ Nasturtiums for the GROW Project, I’ve decided to incorporate the fiery red-orange of the flowers into my overall scheme this [...]

‘Spitfire’ Nasturtium Container Combination Ideas

May 2, 2010
Thumbnail image for ‘Spitfire’ Nasturtium Container Combination Ideas

Almost all of my nasturtium seeds germinated, though some scarification methods were better than others. Interestingly, the only seeds that did not germinate were the seeds soaked in warm water for 3 hours. Even the ones with no scarification eventually germinated, though only after waiting for 15 days! The best method was chipping the seed [...]

A Color Combination I Love: Blue + Orange

April 8, 2010
Thumbnail image for A Color Combination I Love: Blue + Orange

Blue flowers are really catching my eye lately, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how to use them to their best advantage. One way to make a color really pop is to pair it with it’s compliment, the color directly across from it on the color wheel. In blue’s case, that’s orange. Bronco’s fans [...]

I’m trying something new in an effort to share some of the cool things I come across as well as lighten the load for me (writing 5 full-length posts a week for nearly 2 years is starting to take it’s toll). Basically, on Fridays I’m going to be sharing some links and quick ideas for you [...]

Orange & Purple – They Belong Together Like Cookies & Milk

March 16, 2010
Thumbnail image for Orange & Purple – They Belong Together Like Cookies & Milk

One of my favorite color combinations is orange and purple. I secretly dream (well, not-so-secretly, because I’ve talked about it a lot on Twitter) of finding a bearded iris with orange standards and purple falls. Don’t think it exists yet, but Kelly Norris assures me that people are working on it. Anyway, I digress. I’m not [...]

Early Spring Container Combo Idea

February 10, 2010
Thumbnail image for Early Spring Container Combo Idea

The professor who taught my last Master Gardener class mentioned that he ignores the groundhog and watches Evergreen Pear trees for the first signs of Spring. These ornamental pear trees are everywhere in Southern California, and apparently they are one of the first to bloom in Spring. Well, let me tell ya, they are blooming [...]

I Bet You Didn’t Know This Plant Was Edible…

January 28, 2010
Thumbnail image for I Bet You Didn’t Know This Plant Was Edible…

You probably didn’t know that tulips were edible. And quite frankly, who would want to bring a beautiful bunch of tulips inside only to scarf them down? But in case you have the goal of only growing plants you can eat this year, tulips are a good plant for you to fudge the rules a bit. I’ve [...]
