Over the last nine months, several of you have emailed me with photos of your container garden. It’s such a wonderful surprise to find potted gardens in my inbox! I have to say, interacting with other gardeners is my absolute favorite part of blogging. So much so, that I am always thinking about new ways to find other gardeners to talk with and share photos.
With that in mind, I started up a new Flickr group. I am thinking that every other Tuesday I’ll post a new “assignment” and then we can all take photos and add them to the group. Mandatory oohing and ahhing over other group members photos is the only real “rule.”
In case you haven’t heard of Flickr, it is a free photo sharing website. I highly encourage you to join up and join us in the Life on the Balcony group. Email me if you need help signing up or joining the group.
The nice thing about Flickr groups is that they also come with a little messageboard, so feel free to use that to post of a photo of a problem container, pest, unidentified plant, etc and then ask a question. Anyone with a possible answer is encouraged to respond.
Assignment Numero Uno
The first assignment is to take a photo of how your container garden looks right now. Don’t worry if it looks horrible because your area of the planet has only barely thawed out from winter. My thinking behind this the first assignment is to get us all on record with a “before” shot. That way, in a few months, when our gardens look fabulous, we’ll be able to see how far our little balconies and patios have come.
What are you waiting for? Snap those photos and upload them already! I can’t wait to see what you post.
Here’s what I posted to the group. It’s my patio, in all of it’s ratty, overgrown glory:

Sounds like much fun.
I already posted my photos. I really love the idea of connecting with other container gardeners! Several months ago I moved from a house with a big yard near Washington, DC where I was obsessed with native plant gardening to an apartment in north western Italy with two decent sized balconies.
I love that you’re revealing “that” side of you… We all have our days when the garden look less than stellar.
Can’t wait to join!
Ooh, I’m so excited that you all are joining the group. Jess, I can’t wait to pop over to Flickr and see what you uploaded.
Adriana — It was hard to admit that my garden looks shaggy right now, but also freeing too.
