Banish Hum Drum Hummingbird Feeders!

by Fern on December 8, 2008

Have you seen the “high end” hummingbird feeders out there? Hummingbird feeders have come a long way from those red and yellow plastic feeders. Some of the feeders out there now that are truly works of art!

It is really easy to incorporate a hummingbird feeder into a balcony garden. Simply hang the feeder from  a shepherd’s hook (found at most garden centers) stuck into a large pot filled with dirt (and plants, no reason wasting gardening space!). You could even train a vine that attracts hummingbirds to grow on the shepherd’s hook, maximizing the attractiveness of your garden to hummingbirds (and humans!).

There certainly are many beautiful feeders out there! I think it’s important for them to be decorative as well as functional.

There’s a popular gift shop in New Mexico called Jackolope and there’s an artisan there making beautiful ones out of blown glass – these are really pretty, too. We don’t have many hummingbirds, but I’d hang one for decoration.

Cindy — I agree! :-)

Jen — My husband and I are considering different places to go on a short vacation and NM is one of them. If we go, I’ll have to keep an eye out for Jackolope.

I recently bought the Landmark design you have pictured and am very happy with it! It was crazy cheap (<$20 on Amazon) considering how pretty it is. It was an impulse buy to get me over the top for free-shipping and I have absolutely no regrets.

Kelle — Good to know. I asked my husband for that particular feeder for Hanukkah!
