I second the idea of writing the company, encouraging a timely note to be sent, so your brother, and other gift-givers in the future, don't get unnecessary bad vibes from disappointed birthday-ees. I grew an amaryllis indoors once, and still remember how beautiful it was. I don't have an inch of space left in my little apartment, otherwise I'd probably get another one this year. What a lovely surprise gift. I have always been attracted to autumn crocus, Colchium autumnale, but I have not had much luck growing it in my frozen northern garden.
