First things first. Thank you to Nell Jean, Janie (check out the photos from her kennel’s website if you want to see the most adorable French Bulldog puppies), Robert, Julie, Zach, Denny and Cindy for participating. I know I speak for all the judges when I say that we had a lot of fun looking at your photos and reading about your plants. It was a tough choice, and I will say that there was a (somewhat) heated debate about who should be the winner.
Okay, enough babbling and more announcing, right? Click the link below to see who won a copy of The Complete Houseplant Survival Manual…
Robert! The judges loved your photo of Sanseveria ‘Futura.’ Very nice composition, lighting and use of depth of field, not to mention a great looking plant!

I’ll be emailing you shortly to get your shipping address. I will ship the book today, and you should have it by Monday at the latest. Enjoy!!!

That was certainly fun to participate. Thanks for having the contest Fern. My first attempt to photograph plants indoors; half the success was dumb luck. I was leaning toward Nell Jean’s Epiphyllum oxypetalum. I grow a similar night blooming cereus and it’s an event when they flower, worthy of entertaining. Additionally, I thought Janie’s Japanese Lantern Hibiscus was one of the most exotic I’ve seen. I can see how the judges had a difficult decision.
Thanks again,
Robert
Robert–Two things I was wondering about, is your Sanseveria in the same pot as the succulent? And what is the succulent in the photo?
Fern, the succulent accompanying the Sanserviera (proper spelling)is a hybrid known as Graptosedum ‘Ghosty’. It’s a cutting simply stuck in the pot for the holidays. With a profusion of new succulents planted this summer, plenty of opportunities to use cuttings indoors for holiday cheer. They hold their own, don’t require planting yet can be properly planted outdoors in January if one desires. Hum, I could see a blog article on using succulents indoors for the holidays, or maybe making a living wreath out of miniature succulents.
Happy holidays!
Robert
A great photo and very deserving of the win!
Fern, that was fun. Thanks for the chance to enter and enjoy everyone’s photos! The winning photo is very deserving…the background, the lighting, the subject matter, colors, everything! Best wishes to all! Janie
