I was flipping through the photos on my phone, saw the one above, and and idea occurred to me. I originally took the photo (at Long Beach City College’s Horticulture Department plant sale) because I thought hanging strawberry grow bags might be of interest to LOTB readers. But when I saw it the second time I remembered that the grow bags were hanging from a wooden arbor. And that’s the idea that struck me as particularly interesting for balcony gardeners.
Vertical gardening is often suggested to apartment and condo gardeners. And on it’s face, it seems like a good idea. People with hardly any space would be wise to use all the space they have, right? Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve never lived somewhere that allowed me to drill holes in my exterior walls. That’s why hanging things from an arbor is so brilliant. No holes!
But it gets better my friends. Yes, you can now hang grow bags from the arbor that is artfully placed at one end of your balcony. But you can place large pots or a planter box beneath the grow bags to use that space too. And then, you can use the sides to grow climbers like peas or cucumbers. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s the trifecta.

Great suggestion
I need those strawberry grow bags. Thanks so much for this post. I’ll be researching those bags and see if I can use them to solve my strawberry problem: mice, voles and who knows what other night creatures get to my strawberries before I can get to them. If I plant them in the air like this, I’ll be able to fool those creatures and eat my strawberries. Thanks a lot for the idea.
enjoyed the blue and orange combinations. We are looking forward to our California poppy and blue cornflower to bloom. Is the verticle garden cotainer made of pvc pipe? have a great day!
I have NEVER seen a grow bag as attractive as that. For that matter, it seems ALL the upside-down containers I’ve ever seen, as well, are tacky as Aunt Velma’s living room… Where are these particular bags sold, and how much do they cost? Thanks!
How funny! I found this site through the dinner garden website, and here you are in Long Beach! Very nice. I saw those strawberry pots at the LBCC plant sale too, too bad they were $30!
Angela–Though in the air, you still have to worry about birds. It’s always something!
Chucky–Sorry, I’m not sure which vertical garden you’re talking about?
Abigail–I’m not sure. I saw them at a local community college. I’ll try and find out!
inarosie–I actually live in Fullerton. Too funny that we were at the same sale tho!
