Blue flowers are really catching my eye lately, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how to use them to their best advantage. One way to make a color really pop is to pair it with it’s compliment, the color directly across from it on the color wheel. In blue’s case, that’s orange. Bronco’s fans and Cypress Centurions (my high school) will love this combo…

Oooh!!! I love the blue/orange combo
Its just amazing to me to see how many blue flowers are out there these days.
I’m with you- blue and orange- or purple and orange- have got to be my favorite combos! They are just so eye catching!
I have lots of blue in my backyard…I think I need to get some orange now! So pretty!
Carri–Purple and orange is another favorite combo!
Blue and orange is one of my favorite, but right now I have red and yellow pansies and it’s really eye catching. I know they are just pansies but they are sitting on top of the bright green foliage of a little creeping jenny. Spring is here!
Orange and blue certainly do make a striking combination.
They are very pretty colours together. I love the shade of blue of the morning glory.
Eschscholzia californica are awesome. Nothing better than hiking on a trail and coming across these self sowers. Matti
beautiful combo..I must try it this summer.
I love this color combo! I’m thinking about trying it out in some of my beds. Any recommendations for some full sun blue-and-orange combos?
Sarah–All of the plants listed in this post are full-sun.
I’ve planted blue/orange combinations too this year – an orange climbing rose with salvia faracinea and orange asiatic lilies below.
Sue–That sounds fabulous. Orange roses seem to be really in-style at the moment.
Yay; blue and orange is my favourite flower-colour combination these days. I’m delighted to see it getting some love! I used it last year for the first time, and I’m doing it again this year.
Last year, I did Nigella, Blue Pimpernel, California Poppies, Flax, Cornflower, Baby Blue Eyes, Calendula, African Daisies and Chinese Forget-Me-Nots. This year, I got greedy and also bought some seeds for Ageratum, Chinese Larkspur, Blue Woodruff, and Dwarf Sunflowers. Not sure how I’m going to find space for it all!
Of course they’re a beautiful combination: they’re complementary colours. I LOVE blue flowers that is a tad close to sky or teal. I would LOVE to add white and yellow ones too. For some odd reason they’re also catching my eye. I wonder which blue and orange flowers would also complement and help the veggies. Love to combine them pretties!
Lou Ann, I bought some borage (tall with blue flowers) seeds to plant with my tomatoes this year. I read somewhere (maybe it was here?) that growing borage with your tomatoes can even make them taste better.
Marigolds are supposed to be good companion plants for lots of veg, but I just can’t get over my dislike of them.
what a beautifull combination they give such a positive feeling
color blue is nice color for me it means NEVER GIVE UP! -chessca sedero
