Post image for Congrats Laura! You Won the Hand Painted Herb Pots

I am very excited to announce that Laura Hulka’s photo pictured above has been selected as the winner of the set of herb pots. My co-judge and I had such a hard time selecting among the entries that we selected our five favorites, and then selected the winner at random from among them.

Thank you very much to all of you that participated! It was so much fun seeing photos of your balconies. I have a few more giveaways up my sleeve, so stay tuned!

Laura: I’ve emailed you through Facebook. I’ll ship the herb pots to you as soon as I know where to send them.

Post image for Smart Pots Update – Looking Good So Far!

Last January I had a contest to give away a set of soft-sided “Smart Pots,” the winner won several pots with the condition that they check in a few times and share how the plants in their Smart Pots are doing. In case you missed it, Smart Pots are a soft-sided “pot” that is supposed to provide better air circulation in the potting mix. Debra of the Smith Bites blog was the winner, and recently she sent me her initial thoughts. I have also been growing tomatoes, lavender, peppers, dahlias, and lilies in some Smart Pots, and have some initial impressions to share too.

This past weekend I attended a free orchid repotting class at the Armstrong garden center in La Habra. Here’s How to Befriend the Birds, Bees, and Butterflies on Your Balcony

This month’s container gardening blog carnival is about a topic that is near and dear to my heart: wildlife-supporting gardens. I first became interested in gardening after my 10 year old self read a book about planting wildlife-friendly plants in suburban backyards. Attracting bees, hummingbirds, and the like is always a goal in my gardens. […]
